WHOIS Privacy

The WHOIS privacy audit checks whether your domains have privacy protection enabled, flagging any that may be exposing your personal or organisational contact details in public WHOIS records.

How It Works

Navigate to WHOIS in the sidebar. Tidy Names analyses the registrant information stored for each domain and classifies it into one of three categories:

  • Privacy Protected (green) - the registrant details contain known privacy service indicators such as "redacted", "privacy", "proxy", or "whoisguard"
  • Potentially Exposed (red) - the registrant information appears to contain real personal or company details
  • Unknown (grey) - no registrant data is available, typically for domains that haven't been synced with RDAP data yet

Summary Cards

Three cards at the top of the page show:

  • The number of domains with privacy enabled
  • The number of domains potentially exposed
  • The number of domains with no data available

If any domains are marked as exposed, a red warning banner appears recommending you enable WHOIS privacy through your registrar.

Taking Action

Tidy Names does not modify WHOIS settings - it only audits them. To enable privacy protection, log in to the registrar that holds the domain and enable WHOIS privacy or ID protection in their domain settings.

Click any domain name in the table to go to its detail page, where the Protection tab shows the full domain protection analysis including transfer lock status.
